Switching guide

From kibble to raw in 7 days.

Step by step, no rush. Most dogs adapt within a week. Some need a little longer, and that's fine.

Before you start

Thaw in the fridge

Move the next day's bags from the freezer to the fridge 12 to 24 hours ahead. Never use the microwave or hot water: cooked bone isn't safe for dogs.

Weigh their portion

Use a kitchen scale for the first week. The calculator gives you the grams per day; split them into 1 or 2 meals.

Take it out 15 minutes early

Straight from the fridge, some dogs aren't keen. A little time at room temperature helps.

Pick the bowl up after 20 minutes

If they don't finish it, put it back in the fridge and offer it at the next meal. Raw meat shouldn't sit out.

Clean up afterwards

Hands, bowl and surfaces, as with any raw meat. Use thawed food within 48 hours.

The 7-day plan

Every couple of days, a bit more of their usual food is replaced with raw. You can mix them in the same bowl.

Raw foodTheir usual food

Days 1–2

25%

A quarter raw, mixed into their usual food.

Days 3–4

50%

Half and half.

Days 5–6

75%

Three quarters raw.

Day 7

100%

Fully raw. Done!

If their stools get soft, stay at the step you're on for two more days before moving on. Dogs with sensitive stomachs may need 10 to 14 days.

Won't eat it?

It happened with Kai, our first taster: for the first few days he wanted nothing to do with it. Mixed into his usual food, he started eating. This is what works:

  • Mix a spoonful of raw into their usual food and build up slowly.
  • Serve it less cold: 15 to 20 minutes out of the fridge.
  • Cut out treats during the switch so they come to meals hungry.
  • Pick the bowl up after 20 minutes and offer it again at the next meal. A healthy dog can skip a meal without any problem.

What's normal

  • Slightly soft stools in the first few days.
  • Smaller, firmer stools once they've adapted.
  • Drinking a little less water: raw food already contains a lot.

Call your vet if they

  • Vomit more than once.
  • Have diarrhoea for more than 2 days, or with blood.
  • Seem low or eat nothing for 2 days.

After that: one protein at a time

Stay on chicken for about two weeks. Once their stools are normal and steady, add one new protein a week and watch their stools, skin and digestion.
